Oscars

The 79th Academy Awards took place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California on February 25, 2007. The most successful were films: The Departed (4), Pan's Labyrinth (3), An Inconvenient Truth (2), Dreamgirls (2) and Little Miss Sunshine (2). Oscar for the best performance by an actor in a leading role was won by Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), while the Oscar for the best performance by an actress in a leading role went to Helen Mirren (The Queen). The Oscar for best picture was won by The Departed which also won the Oscar for the achievement for directing (Martin Scorsese).

- Martti Ahtisaari presented his plan for the final status of Kosovo which involves an internationally-monitored independence for Kosovo. Serbian leaders refused Ahtisaari's proposal.
- A policeman was killed during a violent riot between football fans in the Sicilian town of Catania.

February 4
- The Indianapolis Colts won the Super Bowl XLI at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, USA.
- Germany won the 2007 World Men's Handball Championship in Köln, Germany.

- Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced candidacy for the President of the United States of America.
- United States Naval officer and a former NASA astronaut, Lisa Nowak was arrested in Orlando, Florida and charged for the attempted kidnapping of U.S. Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman.

- George Gillett and Tom Hicks bought Liverpool F.C.

- Ehren Watada, the First Lieutenant of the United States Army who deserted to avoid deploying to Iraq was court-martialed.
- An e-mail service provided by Google, Gmail was opened to all as a public beta.

- American model and actress Anna Nicole Smith died aged 39.
February 9
- Over 10,000 Serbs protested in Kosovska Mitrovica against the Ahtisaari's proposal for the final status of Kosovo.
- British entrepreneur Richard Branson offered a award of $25 million to the individual or group who will find a solution for the stabilization of the Earth’s climate.

February 10
- UN police clashed with Albanians in Pristina protesting against Ahtisaari's plan.

February 11
- Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov was elected President of Turkmenistan.
- American historian Drew Gilpin Faust became the first female Harvard's president.
- The 49th Annual Grammy Awards took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, USA.

February 12
- Three bombings on two markets in Baghdad, Iraq killed at least 76 people and wounded 170.
- An armed gunman shot and killed five people in shopping centre in Salt Lake City, Utah, while at least four people were killed after a separate shooting incident in the US city of Philadelphia.

February 13
- North Korea agreed to shut down its nuclear facilities in Yongbyon.

February 14
- Serbian parliament has adopted a resolution which rejected a United Nations proposal on the future status of Kosovo.

- Ramzan Kadyrov was named the Chechen president by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

February 17
- Austrian-born American inventor Robert Adler, best known for invention of the wireless remote control for televisions died aged 93.
- Maurice Papon, French bureaucrat convicted for deporting Jews during the World War II died aged 98.

February 18
- Chinese New Year began (Pig).
- The 56th annual NBA All-Star Game was won by the Western Conference.
- Two car bombs in Baghdad, Iraq killed 60 people and wounded 131.

February 19
- Colombian Minister of Foreign Relations Maria Consuelo Araujo resigned due the arrest of her brother, Senator Alvaro Araujo Castro.
- The French parliament voted to amend the French Constitution to include an explicit ban on the death penalty, which has been outlawed in France since 1981.

February 21
- American computer scientist Francis E. Allen became the first female to win the Turing Award.

February 25
- Chelsea F. C. won the 2007 Football League Cup Final.
- The 79th Academy Awards ceremony was held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, USA.

- The International Court of Justice cleared Serbia of responsibility for genocide during the Bosnian war.

- A suicide attack at Bagram Air Base during the visit of Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney killed over 20 people. Cheney was not injured.

- Cuban President Fidel Castro spoke on the telephone with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez live on Chavez' daily radio programme in Caracas.
- English-born Australian musician and singer of rock band Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs, Billy Thorpe died aged 60.
